Many people are taking advantage of the price differences. Let UNITED MOTORS guide you through the procedure of buying your new car abroad. When you follow 10 simple steps, you will succeed in importing your car without a problem and with a tremendous saving.
Step 1 - Making your choice
Decide on the make and model of the car. It might be helpful to first obtain a UK brochure, or visit your local dealer or the UK website of the make of your choice. If you're in the position to choose from a number of makes/ models, United Motors can advise on best saving and quickest delivery (see also "buy by budget") Go to our Quotaliser system and make your selection. Fill out your details to receive the formal offer by email, fax or hardcopy. Let us know that you are serious by providing us with a daytime phone number. It will help us to react promptly to any other query you might have.
Step 2 - Ordering your car
Our formal quotation will show all the details of the car, requested additional options, the deposit required on the car, the warranty applicable, validity of offer, payment conditions etcetera. If you agree on the price and conditions quoted, UNITED MOTORS EUROPE will ask you to confirm the order in writing, by signing the quotation and sending us a hardcopy, along with the deposit, a photocopy of passport and your full address information.
Step 3 - Placing a Deposit
To effectuate the order you need to pay a deposit amount, the size of which is stated on the order form. The deposit is payable into a Fortis Escrow account. The safest way to pay your deposit. Alternatively you can pay your deposit straight to the supplying dealer. When the funds have cleared and your order is accepted, you will receive an order acceptance confirmation.
Step 4- Preparing collection
By sending you a complete balance letter which states the end balance and the VIN number of your car, UNITED MOTORS EUROPE will advise you your new car is ready for collection. This will allow you to arrange your temporary insurance cover note from the insurance company and start making your travel arrangements. If you have chosen, or would still like to choose, to have us transport your car to the UK, or organize complete delivery including vehicle registration we can now set a date and finalize the arrangement. Step 5 - Preparing registration
Request the necessary forms from your nearest DVLA office
In order to register the car, you need to have the Certificate of Conformity plus the official invoice for the car. When you have made full payment upon delivery of your car, you will receive these documents with your car. The new style DVLA system will also take care of the VAT payment. After your car has been registered in the UK, your insurer should be notified so that a normal insurance certificate can be issued.
Step 6 - Payment & Collection
Make an appointment for collection from UNITED MOTORS EUROPE at least five workdays beforehand. This will allow us to plan delivery, obtain the Certificate of Conformity and/ or issue the temporary Dutch plates on the car. Please pay the outstanding balance, including cost of transport arrangement (if applicable) by swift transfer (See Payment Conditions). The temporary plates on the car will be valid for 7 days throughout Europe. A temporary registration document is no replacement of C.O.C. and Invoice, and cannot be used to register your car in the UK.
Step 7 - The way home
United Motors Europe can provide you with a route-planner print-out and additional directions to all possible ferries or the channel tunnel. On entering the UK you do not need to notify Customs. As a European citizen you are allowed to drive your car straight home, and arrange registration at a more convenient moment.
Step 8 -Photocopy of your V5 document
Send a photocopy of your V5 document to us within a week after registration. United Motors Europe needs this to be able to demonstrate that your car has been registered in the UK, and VAT was paid. Please be aware that we cannot submit your car into the UK manufacturers warranty system(s) without this copy!
Step 9 - Finalizing details
After having registered your car, do not forget to get your Road Fund License! Get your license number plates made up with your local garage or parts shop. Fix the plates to the car, display the tax disc and your new car is ready to roll.
Step 10 - Enjoy your new car!
